温室设施与栽培环境

Nursery History and Founders
Wrightman Alpines Nursery (wrightmanalpines.com) is a Canadian specialist alpine-plant nursery founded in 1985 by Harvey Wrightman and his wife Irene on a family farm outside the small town of Kerwood in southwestern Ontario. The nursery cultivates and mail-orders alpine plants to enthusiasts throughout Canada and the United States, with a perennial catalogue of more than seven hundred species, varieties and cultivars of high-elevation ornamentals. During the Kerwood years the display gardens were arranged around dry-laid stone walls, flagstone pathways along the house foundation, hand-chiselled stone troughs and crevice gardens built of tufa and limestone in collaboration with Czech botanist, author and seed-collector Josef Halda. In spring 2014 the nursery relocated to Saint Andrews, New Brunswick on the Fundy coast, where the cool maritime climate, Atlantic exposure and slightly acid glacial soils reproduce many features of true alpine habitats. Greenhouses and propagation frames were rebuilt that summer and a new round of stock establishment began. Harvey Wrightman was diagnosed with terminal cancer the following year and, after a brief remission during which he constructed a final tufa crevice garden, died in December 2016, having entrusted the nursery to the next generation of growers trained over nearly two decades of apprenticeship.
Scope of Operations: Alpine Propagation and Mail Order
The nursery’s core business is the seed propagation, cutting propagation, container cultivation and cross-border mail order of true alpine plants; the catalogue lists over seven hundred species, varieties and cultivars, with bespoke sourcing available for collectors’ requests on rarer taxa. The outdoor landscape exploits the property’s proximity to the Bay of Fundy; a sheltered, shaded nook near the house hosts dwarf rhododendrons, hardy African violets (Saintpaulia) and woodlanders such as Jeffersonia, Hepatica, Trillium and Epigea; the steep hillside above is planted as a ‘pit run’ scree garden of unsifted coarse sand, providing the sharp drainage demanded by tap-rooted alpines; a stone-trough display area beside the house shelters Kabschia saxifrages, the most demanding of the cool-moisture enthusiasts. The nursery’s location twenty minutes from Calais, Maine enables consolidated cross-border hand-off of consolidated United States shipments to domestic carriers.
Mail-Order System, Shipping Season and Cross-Border Phytosanitary Process
Most plants are grown in 7 cm × 9 cm pots to withstand courier handling and rapid transplant establishment; pots are topped with lightly moistened sphagnum moss and packed with packing peanuts to immobilise the root balls.
