网站内容最初靠创始人数十年的手工录入与对照而来,文字资料主要取自:国际铁线莲协会会刊《Clematis International》、英国铁线莲协会会刊《The Clematis》、Magnus Johnson 的两本专著《Slaktet Klematis》与《The genus Clematis》、Christopher Grey-Wilson 的《Clematis, the Genus》、Timber Press 出版的《An Illustrated Encyclopedia of Clematis》、RHS 在 2002 年出版的《International Clematis Register and Checklist》及后续补充本、RHS Plant Finder 1999-2000 年版。
About the Database
Clematis on the Web is an online reference database aimed at clematis enthusiasts worldwide. It was set up in 1999 by Richard Green and Ian Lang in the UK, and from January 2023 has been maintained and developed under the umbrella of the International Clematis Society. The site follows the naming conventions recommended by the Royal Horticultural Society, the present International Cultivar Registration Authority for clematis, so the cultivar names you find here align with those used in horticultural trade and in formal registration.
Scope and Sources
The database currently covers more than four thousand clematis cultivars, illustrated by over four thousand photographs that depict well over half of the entries. The text content was assembled over many years from a wide range of sources, the most important of which are: the journal Clematis International of the International Clematis Society; the journal The Clematis of the British Clematis Society; Magnus Johnson’s Slaktet Klematis and The Genus Clematis; Christopher Grey-Wilson’s monograph Clematis, the Genus; Toomey and Leeds’s An Illustrated Encyclopedia of Clematis; the RHS publication International Clematis Register and Checklist 2002 and its periodic supplements; and the RHS Plant Finder 1999–2000 edition.
Search and Browse Features
The site offers several complementary ways in. There is a full-text search by cultivar name or keyword, a picture search that lets you narrow down by flower shape and colour, an A–Z index of the whole collection, and a separate “Clematis people” section listing breeders, photographers, researchers and active members of the various societies through the years. The “Pruning” and “Diseases” pages turn the variety database into a working handbook: pruning is explained by clematis pruning group (Group 1 / 2 / 3), while the diseases pages cover the most common ailments you are likely to encounter in cultivation.
Photographs and the People Behind the Site
A large share of the photographs in the database comes from a fairly fixed circle of contributing nurseries and individuals. The acknowledgements list runs to several dozen names and includes major clematis breeders and collectors — J van Zoest in Boskoop, the Kivistik family at Roogoja in Estonia, Thorncroft Clematis Nursery, Silver Star Vinery, Raymond Evison, Bremer Clematis Gardens, Ton Hannink and many others — who have fed the database with new cultivars and new pictures over the years. The International Clematis Registrars (Duncan Donald, Victoria Matthews) have also helped review names and registration details. Since 2023 the editorship has been carried by Agnes Kwan and other ICS volunteers, while the original founders retain an advisory role.
What the Site Is Not
Unlike a commercial clematis nursery, Clematis on the Web does not sell plants, does not identify unnamed photographs from emails, and does not offer general gardening advice: the “Contact Us” link in the top menu exists mainly to collect corrections, new entries and new photographs from contributors. The site itself is in English, but the cultivar names follow the Latin nomenclature registered with the RHS, which means anyone in the world who knows the official spelling can find a particular plant. The site has been freely available online since 1999, and the copyright notice 1999–2026 reflects the long-running nature of the project.
