Company History

Lens Roses traces back to 1870, when Louis Lens senior founded the general nursery Boomkwekerijen Louis Lens in Onze-Lieve-Vrouw-Waver near Mechelen, Belgium. The firm shifted its focus to roses by the end of the 19th century, and under the second-generation Victor Lens it began systematic hybridisation, producing cultivars such as ‘Villes de Malines’, ‘Cardinal Mercier’, ‘Princesse Joséphine Charlotte’ and ‘Madame Louis Lens’. The nursery became a supplier to rosarians and trade nurseries across Britain, Germany, France and Italy. The Second World War halted production for four years and most of the older collections were lost. From 1947 Louis Lens (1924–2001), Victor’s son, took up the breeding work. Trained in mathematics and astronomy, he released the immaculate white hybrid tea ‘Pascali’ in 1963, from a cross of ‘Queen Elizabeth’ and ‘White Butterfly’; in 1991 ‘Pascali’ was inducted into the World Federation of Rose Societies Rose Hall of Fame as “World’s Favourite Rose” and has accumulated eleven international awards. Louis Lens died on 10 May 2001, having introduced over 200 cultivars — a body of work that outnumbers David Austin’s 190.

The Fourth Generation and the Move to Oudenburg

In 1992 the nursery relocated from Onze-Lieve-Vrouw-Waver to Oudenburg in West Flanders, between Bruges and Ostend, under Rudy and Ann Velle-Boudolf. Ann continued Louis Lens’s breeding direction and expanded the Hybrid Musk line with ‘Dinky’, ‘Jean Stéphenne’, ‘Gaard um Tiizenbierg’, ‘Caroline’s Heart’, ‘La Feuillerie’ and others. Today the nursery is run by a third generation of family members including Antje Cochuyt, Sébastien Declercq, Dimitri Schaut, Josha Pylyser, Wouter Velle and Wim Van Wassenhove.

Range and Scale

The current catalogue holds more than 850 rose cultivars — over 800 are listed as core garden roses — covering old shrub roses, climbers and ramblers, ground-cover roses, Hybrid Musks, English (Austin) roses, Botanical roses, hybrid teas, Floribundas and standard roses. Production covers 2.5 hectares of bare-root field plus a 2500 m² display garden with roughly 600 cultivars on view. The orangerie is in bloom in April, the container field supplies flowering plants through summer, and bare-root roses are lifted from mid-November to mid-April. The firm describes itself as a “living library” of roses with proven garden value.

Breeding Focus: Hybrid Musks

The current breeding programme centres on Hybrid Musks — a group derived from R. moschata, Noisette roses and Rosa multiflora, systemised in England in 1913 by the Reverend Joseph Pemberton, whose ‘Penelope’, ‘Cornelia’ and ‘Felicia’ remain reference cultivars. Like him, the Lens programme uses Peter Lambert’s 1904 ‘Trier’ as a starting point and selects for repeat flowering, healthy foliage, a natural shrub habit and refined scent. Louis Lens’s other landmarks in this line include ‘Guirlande d’Amour’, ‘Plaisanterie’, ‘Pleine de Grâce’, ‘Bouquet Parfait’, ‘Rush’, and a composer series named ‘Ravel’, ‘Schubert’, ‘Sibelius’, ‘Puccini’, ‘Paganini’ and ‘Verdi’. Beyond ‘Pascali’, Lens Roses continues to register roughly two new cultivars a year.

Shows and Public Events

The nursery attends plant fairs across Belgium and the wider area — Beervelde, Bingerden (NL), Celles, Hex, Kalmthout, Lasne, Chaalis (FR) and Hesperange (LU) — and hosts pruning courses in March, guided walks among the flowering roses in June, and a rose-hip harvest day in autumn. Lens Roses supplies both private gardeners and trade nurseries across Belgium, the Netherlands, France, Germany, Britain and Italy. A small 1870 nursery has grown into one of Europe’s most comprehensive and historically rooted rose collections.
