从两株花开始的收藏
牡丹乐园 Pfingstrosen-Paradies 的正式写法是 Pfingstrosen-Paradies，在德国下莱茵地区，是一家专做牡丹（芍药属 PAEONIACEAE 里分出的这几个栽培类型）的专业苗圃。和许多只做单一作物的园艺企业一样，这家也是从兴趣开始的。
主人在上世纪七十年代中期的艾费尔山区度假时，从房东太太手里各得一株红花重瓣药药和 Maxima 品种，从此开始收集。五十多年过去，收藏从最初的两株长到八百多个品种，爱好变成了职业，全家都投入到这门生意里。
两次搬家
2002 年夏天，他们终于买下自己的苗圃，位于 Korschenbroich，在住宅周围搭了一圈展示区，也种了不少牡丹之外的植物。十四年后老地方不够用了，2017 年春天搬到 Grevenbroich-Hemmerden 的一处独栋庄园，离旧址往南约十公里，靠近 Dyck 城堡。2016 年他们先在庄园四周建起现在的展示花园。
如今庄园周围和花园里一共种了一千多个牡丹品种，占地约五千平方米，每株都插着标签，可以先看成株的样子再决定要不要买。儿子 Max 受过多年生植物园艺师训练，又读了生产园艺方向的专业课，2022 年起也回到园里，这是第二代接手。
展示花园与看花期
展示花园四月中到六月初开放，2026 年的开放日是 4 月 4 日至 6 月 14 日，每周末六、日两天 12 点到 17 点；五月起切花采收期间，周一、周三、周五也开。劳动节、基督升天日、圣灵降临节后的星期一和圣体节这四天额外开放。现场盆栽品种有二百多个，平时是看不到的。
切花从五月中旬起一直到六月，每天在园里就能买到新鲜的。这里种三十个专门做切花的品种，其中有些是独有的。秋天下单则走秋季发货这条线，根是在挖苗季起的。
卖什么
网店在售分门别类，数目大致是：多年生牡丹一百一十九个，灌木牡丹一百六十个、其中 lutea 杂交一百四十四个、Rockii 杂交十三个，Itoh 杂交五十七个，乳突牡丹（Lactiflora）杂交七十个，另有野生种几个、鸢尾三十三个，以及礼券和组合套餐。单株盆栽有现货两百多个，其余按秋季裸根发货。
所以「五百多个品种」和「一千多个品种」并不矛盾：前者多指店里在卖的量，后者指园里种着的总量。至于展示花园那几页上写的七百多种，属于页面没跟上更新的旧说法，看苗圃自己的介绍页比较准。
怎么找到他们
苗圃在下莱茵的 Grevenbroich-Hemmerden，从杜塞尔多夫、科隆和鲁尔区过来都不算远，导航提示旧版本软件可能找不准路线，站上专门写了两条备选走法。电话咨询只在周一和周五提供，五六月牡丹季和九十月发货季基本打不通。
2026 年的牡丹季已经结束，苗圃要等到 2027 年四月再开。若是不方便到现场，秋天下单是最省事的办法，苗圃把发货截止时间写在站内公告里，错过就要等下一年。
A collection that began with two plants
Pfingstrosen-Paradies is a specialist nursery on the Lower Rhine in Germany, working with the cultivated members of the peony group. Like many nurseries built around a single crop, it started as a hobby rather than a business plan.
While on a holiday in the Eifel in the mid-1970s the owner was given one plant each by his hostess: a red double-flowered paeonia officinalis rubra plena and one called Festiva Maxima. More than fifty years later that pair has grown into a collection of over eight hundred varieties, the hobby became a job, and the whole family is involved in it.
Two moves
In the summer of 2002 the family finally bought a nursery of their own at Korschenbroich, putting a display area around the house and planting a good deal besides peonies. Fourteen years on the site was too small, and in spring 2017 they moved to an isolated holding at Grevenbroich-Hemmerden, about ten kilometres south of the old place and near Schloss Dyck. The present display garden around the farm was begun in 2016.
The collection now grown on the holding and in the display garden runs to more than a thousand varieties on roughly five thousand square metres, every one of them labelled, so a visitor can see a plant at full size before deciding on it. Their son Max trained as a herbaceous perennial horticulturist, studied production horticulture, and joined the business in 2022, making this the second generation running it.
The display garden and when to come
The display garden is open from mid-April to the beginning of June. For 2026 the viewing days run from 4 April to 14 June, Saturdays and Sundays from 12 to 17, with Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays added once the cutting flower harvest begins in May. Four public holidays are also open: Labour Day, Ascension Day, Whit Monday and Corpus Christi. More than two hundred varieties are held in pots on site at any one time.
Cut flowers are available daily from about the middle of May until June, and thirty varieties are grown for cutting, some of them exclusively for that purpose. Autumn orders ship bare-root, lifted during the digging season.
What they sell
The online shop is broken down by type, with roughly a hundred and nineteen herbaceous peonies, a hundred and sixty tree peonies including a hundred and forty-four Lutea hybrids and thirteen Rockii hybrids, fifty-seven Itoh hybrids, seventy Lactiflora hybrids, a handful of wild species, thirty-three irises, plus vouchers and bundles.
That is why the five hundred figure and the thousand figure are not in conflict: one refers to what is offered for sale, the other to what is planted out. The seven hundred mentioned on the display garden page is older copy that has not kept up with the current collection.
Finding them
The nursery is at Grevenbroich-Hemmerden in the Lower Rhine, within easy reach of Düsseldorf, Cologne and the Ruhr. Older navigation software has trouble finding the place, and the site gives two alternative routes. Telephone advice is offered only on Mondays and Fridays, and even then the line is hard to reach during the peony season in May and June and during shipping in September and October.
The 2026 season has closed and the nursery reopens in April 2027. For anyone who cannot travel, an autumn order is the simplest route, and the nursery posts its order cut-off dates in its news; miss them and it is another year.
