A family nursery outside Coventry

Avondale Nursery is at Baginton, a few miles outside Coventry, and grows herbaceous perennials. The nursery describes itself as family-run, and the list leans towards the less usual kinds: geums, geraniums, crocosmias, agapanthuses, salvias and heleniums, on show from spring into autumn.

It does not hold ground of its own but works a corner of a shared site, where two other nurseries and a garden centre also trade, along with a small cafe. Visitors get all of it in one trip.

Three National Plant Collections

The collections are what the nursery is known for. Plant Heritage, the body behind the scheme, awards it to people who can document, develop and conserve a comprehensive collection of one group of plants. Avondale holds three: Anemone nemorosa, Sanguisorba, and Symphyotrichum novae-angliae, long sold as Aster novae-angliae.

The flowering runs in sequence. Wood anemones come first in March, the sanguisorbas flower right through the summer, and more than fifty varieties of Michaelmas daisy are on show in the display garden in September. Most of the collection plants can be bought as well.

The Library Garden

The display garden is called the Library Garden because visitors treat it like a reference book: every plant carries a label naming it. That is useful if you want to see a plant properly before committing to it. The garden is small, split between sunny and shady areas, and planted right through to late autumn. Much of what the nursery sells is propagated from stock plants here, and some of the potted plants came from the same garden. Entrance is free during opening hours.

Ordering and collecting

Most perennials are supplied in pots from 1.5 to 3 litres, some bulbs and bamboos excepted. Stock changes from year to year, and the website no longer takes mail order.

Email a list instead. The nursery replies on what it can set aside and holds it for collection in person. If you are making a special trip for one plant, write or ring first.

Opening times and how they work

The main season runs March to September, Wednesday to Sunday, 10am to 4pm, closed Monday and Tuesday. October and February are reduced to Thursday and Friday. Groups of ten or more can arrange a garden visit for a small charge.

On the environmental side, potting compost is peat-free, pest and disease problems are handled with biological and organic controls, plastic pots are reused and recycled wherever possible, and the carriers are made from home-compostable starch.
