Greenlife Industry Australia (GIA) is the national peak body for Australia’s nursery and greenlife industry. Acting as the central representative hub, GIA advocates for growers at the federal level, working alongside government agencies, industry groups and research partners to ensure the sector’s needs are heard, understood and supported. Headquartered in Canberra, GIA is a not-for-profit registered charity (ABN 59 634 584 017).
Role of a Peak Industry Body
As a peak body, GIA connects businesses, states, supply chains and government; solves shared challenges such as pests, workforce shortages and trade barriers; advocates to government on how the industry works and why it matters; and oversees the strategic allocation of nursery levy funds to high-impact industry projects.
Core Focus Areas
GIA’s five strategic pillars are: Biosecurity — operating under the Emergency Plant Pest Response Deed (EPPRD) to manage pest incursion risks and provide compensation to affected growers; Climate resilience — supporting growers in adapting to climate and environmental challenges; Workforce development — advancing skills, training and workforce capacity across the sector; Research and innovation — advocating for research, innovation and investment; and Promoting greenlife — demonstrating how plants improve the health of communities, cities and lives. GIA administers the national nursery accreditation program, maintains the Greenlife Business Directory, and collaborates with state associations to advance the greenlife sector.
Leadership and Structure
GIA comprises state and territory nursery associations, governed by a skills-based board of professionals from across the country. The Canberra-based leadership team includes CEO Sean Cole (appointed January 2026) and Extension Officers located in multiple states. Principal Extension Officer Barry Naylor brings over 40 years of horticulture experience. Celeste Cook manages biosecurity, research and development, while Smart Farming Project Officer David Hunt is based in Brisbane. Staff backgrounds span policy, biosecurity, communications and industry development, combining strategic thinking with practical, on-the-ground knowledge of nursery production.
