历史沿革与园区规模

History and Site Scale
Hoyt Arboretum sits within Washington Park in Portland, Oregon, about two miles from downtown, and is managed jointly by the city government and a long-standing nonprofit partner. Its land traces back to a 632-acre donation land claim filed by Eli and Ann C. Stewart in 1851; Multnomah County later used 160 acres of it as the Hillside Farm poor farm until 1911. In 1922 Portland purchased the site for ten dollars, and in 1928 Superintendent of Parks C. P. Keyser realized the vision of a municipal arboretum. Horticulturist and landscape designer John W. Duncan completed the original planting plan in 1930, and that plan still guides the layout today. The Arboretum covers roughly 190 ridge-top acres, has 12 miles of trails, is open free to the public year-round, and holds more than 6,000 trees and shrubs representing over 2,300 species from six continents across 170 families, including 67 species listed as rare or endangered.
Living Collections and Three Accredited Specialties
Hoyt Arboretum is curated like a museum of living trees. Most of the grounds are arranged by phylogeny, grouping plants that share common evolutionary ancestors; the Bristlecone Pine Trail is the notable exception, organized geographically by country of origin. The Arboretum holds three Nationally Accredited Collections — Conifers, Maples, and Magnolias — and most trees trace to documented wild-collected seed propagated at the Mt. Tabor nursery beginning in 1914. Continuous record-keeping since those earliest plantings supports an online Plant Database covering approximately 6,300 entries, each with family, genus, species, common name, cultivar, provenance, and location data, all made freely available to researchers, educators, and the public.
Ex Situ Conservation and Research
As a member of Botanic Gardens Conservation International (BGCI), the Arboretum places ex situ conservation at the center of its scientific mission. It safeguards living genetic lineages of 67 globally endangered tree species recognized by IUCN and is extending that work to regionally rare species. Featured threatened taxa in the collection include Torreya taxifolia from Florida, Magnolia zenii from China, and Franklinia alatamaha, extinct in the wild. The Arboretum also operates a Herbarium of dried specimens that supports research in systematics, phylogenetics, morphology, paleoecology, invasive species phytogeography, urban ecology, and conservation biology. The 1930 Duncan Plan still hangs in the Bill deWeese Classroom and remains the foundational document for both horticulture and historical interpretation.
Education and Public Engagement
The Arboretum is sustained by a long-standing partnership between Portland Parks & Recreation (PP&R) and Hoyt Arboretum Friends (HAF), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded in 1986 that funds programs, recruits volunteers, runs the Visitor Center, organizes tours and classes, and supports day-to-day stewardship. Educational offerings include preschool nature programs, school field trips in spring and fall, scout and homeschool programs, Discovery Packs for self-guided visits, and adult courses on botany, ecology, and nature illustration. Free volunteer-led guided tours run seasonally from April through October, and private group tours can be booked year-round. These programs position the Arboretum as a true outdoor classroom for the Portland region.
Membership, Inclusion, and Stewardship
HAF’s membership program, annual fundraising, and volunteer network keep the Arboretum free and open to all. Annual donations of thirty-five dollars or more unlock member benefits including Visitor Center discounts, class fee reductions, advanced Plant Database access, and member-only events. Programs such as Silver Leaf Stewards and Planned Giving allow donors to establish long-term relationships with individual trees, while Arborist Partners link the Arboretum with regional tree-care professionals. The organization has published a formal Diversity, Equity, Accessibility, and Inclusion (DEAI) statement committing to welcoming visitors of all backgrounds, ensuring Hoyt Arboretum continues to serve as Portland’s living museum of trees.
