栽培要点

苗圃官方指南强调三个关键：每日至少 6 小时日照、每周约 1 寸水量、植株达 30 寸以上时需立支柱防止倒伏。种植时期以紫丁香盛开与玉米下种的季节为参照；穴深约一铁锹，先施低氮肥再覆土，球根横置，芽眼向上紧贴支柱。

生长期间的施肥重点是磷钾：植株长到 12 寸之后每三周一次 0-46-0 磷酸盐，七月底再加 0-0-50 钾盐以壮大球根。摘心与疏蕾是整形的关键步骤——保留第四对叶片上方的主茎可让植株变得更茂盛，更利于开花。

Location and Setting

The nursery sits on the southern fringe of the Oak Ridges Moraine, in Northumberland County near Port Hope, Ontario — a well-drained transitional landscape between Lake Huron and Lake Ontario that suits dahlia cultivation.

There is no public display garden and no walk-up sales from the property. Visits to see the dahlias in the field can be arranged by appointment.

Varieties and Scale

An annual catalog is published online, grouped by bloom form and size: blooms over 8 inches, 6–8 inches, 4–6 inches, under 4 inches, balls and mini-balls, pom pons, waterlily, low-growing, plus pollinator categories including open-face, anemone, collarette, and orchids & orchettes. Mature plant heights span roughly 12-inch miniatures to 6-foot giants.

The catalog states that every tuber sold is true to name and carries at least one visible eye.

Ordering and Shipping

Tubers typically ship in mid to late May so they arrive in time for planting. Earlier requests, for instance to start tubers in pots under cover, can be arranged on request.

Growing Notes

The nursery’s official growing guide recommends a minimum of six hours of direct sun per day, roughly one inch of water per week, and staking for plants that exceed thirty inches in height. The planting window is signalled by blooming lilacs and corn-planting time. Holes are dug one spade deep, low-nitrogen fertilizer is added and covered with soil, then the tuber is laid on its side with its eye facing up close to the stake.

During the growing season, the guide calls for a heaping teaspoon of 0-46-0 super triple phosphate every three weeks once plants reach twelve inches, with an extra dose of 0-0-50 muriate of potash from late July onward to build strong tubers. Topping above the fourth leaf pair promotes a bushier plant and more flowers; disbudding produces longer stems and larger blooms.

Lifting usually begins after the first hard frost or on October 1. Clumps are dug, washed, dried for 24 hours, divided with rotten or eyeless tubers discarded, then stored in vermiculite, shavings, or peat at roughly 5°C in the dark until the next planting season.
