Fancy Fronds Nursery is a small family-run mail-order nursery in Gold Bar, Snohomish County, Washington, that has specialised in hardy temperate garden ferns for all U.S. growing zones since 1981. The nursery is open by appointment year-round, with spring and fall as the main shipping seasons; most plants leave the nursery as 4″ container specimens shipped with their full root ball, never bare-root, so that mail-order plants arrive in good condition.

Founder and Family

The nursery was founded by Judith Jones, daughter of a surgeon and a desert-flora botanist, who grew up around plants and later fell into the world of Victorian fern cultivation and taxonomy. Since the 1980s she has named and introduced several new fern cultivars and is regarded as a leading expert on the identification of temperate fern species. Her personal collection holds over 1,000 fern taxa, and she regularly helps customers identify specimens and choose varieties suited to their USDA zone. She runs the nursery with her family, including Felix Jones, and the business retains a strongly family-run character.

Plant Range

The catalogue is fern-centric and organised by both use and growing environment, covering hardy temperate ferns, Victorian-era cultivars, xeric (desert) ferns, alpine ferns, tropical and sub-tropical ferns, and spike-mosses (Selaginella), which are lycophytes rather than true mosses despite the common name. Representative stock includes the King of the Male Ferns, Japanese Painted Fern, Western Sword Fern, Northern Maidenhair and other temperate classics, with a small side range of hardy Hosta cultivars as companion plants.

Shipping and Services

The nursery accepts mail orders from all 50 U.S. states and ships exclusively via U.S. Postal Service Priority Mail; it does not ship outside the United States. Plants are lifted, root-ball wrapped and dispatched only during the cool spring and fall windows, with shipping paused through the mid-summer heat (typically mid-July through August) and the coldest winter months (November through February). A $20 minimum order is suggested to spread the flat-rate shipping base. The nursery exhibits at regional plant sales around the Pacific Northwest, gives fern lectures by appointment, and survived both the 2015 fall flood and the May 2016 Gold Bar fire to keep operating.

From 2003 onward it has appeared almost every year at the Northwest Flower & Garden Show in Seattle, and has repeatedly sold plants at events hosted by Heronswood, the Hardy Plant Society of Oregon, Hortlandia and other regional horticultural societies. It also hosted an annual Frolic Open House for sixteen consecutive years.
