协会沿革
美国洛杉矶国际蕨类协会（Los Angeles International Fern Society, 简称 LAIFS）起源于 1954 年在洛杉矶 Dr. W. Clyde Drummond 家中召集的蕨类学习小组（Fern Study Group），1958 年正式更名为 Los Angeles Fern Society，1965 年因会员和所栽培的蕨类已遍及世界各地而在名称中加入 “International” 一词。
首展与历年大展
1964 年 5 月 16 日，协会在好莱坞 Poinsettia Park 一栋加州西班牙风格建筑里举办了首届蕨展，184 名会员把会场布置成一座蕨类丛林：鹿角蕨沿墙悬挂，兰花、铁线蕨、骨碎补和棕榈在舞台上形成热带主题，800 多名观众到场观看；这之后每年的蕨展成为协会的招牌活动。
月度例会与场地
协会现行的月度会员例会安排在每月第二个星期二晚 7 点，地点是洛杉矶县树木园（Los Angeles County Arboretum）Bamboo Room 讲座厅，树木园位于加州阿卡迪亚（Arcadia），紧邻 210 高速公路；近年同时开放线上参会通道，具体场次以官方网站公告为准。
出版物与教育资源
协会自 1967 年起出版年度 Fern Annual，1974 年改版为季刊 Bulletin of the Los Angeles International Fern Society，后正式定名为 LAIFS Fern Journal。协会同时运行一个会员专享的书店（Bookstore）和园艺用品供应点（Supply Store），常设借阅图书馆与入门蕨类课程讲义，老讲义中有相当一部分仍由协会首任研究主任 Wilbur W. Olson 夫妇编写。
协会治理与会员
协会事务由志愿组成的董事会治理，现任理事名单以最新一期 LAIFS Journal 与官方网页为准。会员可获得一年四期的 LAIFS Journal、Bookstore 与 Supply Store 折扣，以及月度例会、年度蕨展和户外花园参观的优先权，会员类别与年度会费按会员身份分级，具体数额以官方公布的入会表格为准。
Society History
The Los Angeles International Fern Society (LAIFS) traces back to August 1954, when eight people met at the home of Dr. W. Clyde Drummond to form the Fern Study Group. By 1958 the group had expanded and adopted the name Los Angeles Fern Society; the word “International” was added in 1965 to reflect both the geographic spread of the membership and the worldwide range of ferns they cultivated.
First Show and Annual Exhibits
On May 16, 1964 the Society held its first public fern show at a California-Spanish style building in Poinsettia Park in Hollywood. The 184 members turned the auditorium into a tropical fantasy—staghorn ferns hung along the walls, maidenhair ferns, davallias and palms filled the stage, and more than 800 visitors came through the doors. The annual show has remained the Society’s signature event ever since.
Monthly Meetings and Venue
General membership meetings are now held on the second Tuesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. in the Bamboo Room lecture hall at the Los Angeles County Arboretum in Arcadia, California, one block south of the 210 Freeway; an online attendance option is also available, and the latest details are posted on the Society’s official website.
Publications and Educational Resources
The Society has published an annual Fern Annual since 1967; in September 1974 it was relaunched as the Bulletin of the Los Angeles International Fern Society, later renamed LAIFS Fern Journal, now issued quarterly. Members also have access to a Bookstore and a Supply Store selling sphagnum moss, wire baskets, hapu pots and similar items, plus a lending library and the original fern lesson sheets drafted by research director Wilbur W. Olson and his wife Bee.
Governance and Membership
The Society is run by a volunteer board; the current roster of officers and directors is published in each LAIFS Journal and on the official website. Members receive the quarterly LAIFS Journal, discounts at the Bookstore and Supply Store, and access to the monthly meetings, the annual fern show and the Society’s field trips. Dues are set by membership category, and the full schedule is listed on the official website’s membership form.
