Ferncliff Gardens is a family-owned retail nursery located in Mission, British Columbia, on the eastern bench of the Fraser Valley east of Vancouver. Founded in 1920 by the Jack family, the nursery has operated continuously for one hundred and five years, specializing exclusively in dahlia tubers. David Jack serves as owner and manager, working alongside his wife Sheila and the next generation Tony and Angie to maintain the production, retail, and shipping operations that serve Canadian and American dahlia enthusiasts each spring.

Founding Heritage and 105 Years of Family Operation

The nursery operates on a strict seasonal calendar, opening for orders in late winter and shipping tubers from late March through late April before closing to the public for the remainder of the year. The off-season is dedicated to tuber dividing, cold storage, and field review of new seedling candidates. Visitors are welcomed by appointment only outside the regular pickup window, and the on-site garden is not open to general public tours.

David Jack Originations: The FERNCLIFF and MISSION Series

The heart of the catalog is the FERNCLIFF naming series originated by David Jack himself, accompanied by the related MISSION series named for the city where the nursery sits. The FERNCLIFF series includes Ferncliff Ebony, Ferncliff Midnight, Ferncliff Sunstruck, Ferncliff Passion, Ferncliff Inspiration, Ferncliff Spice, Ferncliff Blizzard, Ferncliff Fuego, Ferncliff Samba, Ferncliff Solar Flare, Ferncliff Starlight, Ferncliff Apricot, Ferncliff Black Cherry, Ferncliff Bliss, Ferncliff Bride, Ferncliff Citron, Ferncliff Concord, Ferncliff Dreamer, Ferncliff Kathleen, Ferncliff Rusty, Ferncliff Cinnamon, Ferncliff Gem, Ferncliff Gumdrops, Ferncliff Honeycomb, Ferncliff Pincushion, Ferncliff Thunder, Ferncliff Dolly, Ferncliff Lemon Kiss, and Ferncliff Pirate, spanning six bloom-form categories. The MISSION series is represented by Mission Canary, a Waterlily type that captures the painterly palette of Vancouver-area dahlias. These two origination series, together with introduced varieties from Clearview, AC, Hollyhill, Hamari, Penhill, and Clydes, form the backbone of the nursery’s three hundred plus individual cultivar retail catalog each year.

Ordering Workflow Minimums and Cross-Border Shipping

The nursery accepts orders by website, mail, phone, and fax, with a minimum of 50 Canadian dollars for Canadian customers and 100 Canadian dollars (about 135 CAD) for United States customers. Shipping within Canada and the United States is charged in four tiers based on order total: 27.95 CAD for orders up to 90 CAD, 34.95 CAD for 90.01 to 125 CAD, 42.95 CAD for 125.01 to 175 CAD, and 50 CAD for orders above 175.01 CAD. Pickup orders pay no shipping fee. Sales tax is calculated by province: BC adds 7 percent provincial sales tax and 5 percent federal GST; Ontario, New Brunswick, Newfoundland add 13 percent HST; Nova Scotia adds 15 percent HST; other provinces add 5 percent federal GST only. Orders above 100 CAD (excluding collection packages) receive a bonus dahlia tuber, with additional bonus tubers for higher order values. Cross-border customers shipping to the United States should note that US Customs began charging a 250 CAD brokerage and handling fee in 2025 to cover US broker fees, USPS shipping, and Canadian Agriculture Inspection fees; the nursery offsets this with a favorable 100 USD to 135 CAD exchange rate plus additional bonus tubers.
