Botanic Gardens Conservation International: A Global Network for Plant Diversity

BGCI was established in 1987 as an independent UK registered charity, headquartered at 199 Kew Road, Richmond, London. Its mission is to mobilise botanic gardens and engage partners in securing plant diversity for the well-being of people and the planet. Representing botanic gardens in over 100 countries, BGCI’s network covers approximately one-third of all known plant species diversity, making it one of the most influential international organisations in global plant conservation.

Global Plant Diversity Database Network

BGCI develops and maintains four globally unique open-access databases that serve as core data infrastructure for plant conservation worldwide. PlantSearch provides global plant collection records; GardenSearch offers a directory of botanic gardens across 130+ countries; ThreatSearch monitors plant threat profiles; and GlobalTreeSearch, developed jointly with the Global Tree Specialist Network, maps tree species distribution globally. These databases are freely accessible to researchers, conservation practitioners, and the public, with weekly queries growing steadily worldwide. BGCI also operates PlantConnect for expert networking, the Conservation Action Tracker for monitoring conservation interventions, and the Global Tree Portal for integrated data access.

Scientific Assessment and Flagship Reports

BGCI’s most influential scientific contribution is the 2021 State of the World’s Trees report—the first comprehensive assessment of all approximately 60,000 tree species globally. The report revealed that 30% of tree species face extinction threat, with over 440 classified as Critically Endangered. Produced in collaboration with more than 150 institutions, this landmark report provides critical data for the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation and the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. BGCI’s 2026-2030 Strategic Framework centres on reducing tree extinction risk as a core objective.

Professional Publishing and Knowledge Sharing

BGCI advances plant conservation through a structured publishing programme. The bi-annual BGjournal focuses on living collection management and data standards; Roots magazine serves horticulture educators and public engagement practitioners; technical review series provides operational guidance for frontline conservation workers; and the Annual Review documents network-wide progress. BGCI’s two flagship conferences—the International Congress on Education in Botanic Gardens and the Global Botanic Gardens Congress—bring together thousands of researchers and practitioners worldwide to advance ex-situ conservation and botanical education.
