Enchanting Sweet Peas is a family-run sweet pea seed business founded by Glenys Johnson in Sebastopol, California. Operating for over 28 years since its 1997 founding, the nursery specialises in seed production and retail of the English Spencer series of sweet peas, offering 28 named varieties across pink, white, blue, violet, red, peach, bicolour and striped selections. Enchanting Sweet Peas published its first printed seed catalogue in 1999 and launched enchantingsweetpeas.com in 2000, while twice being featured in Better Homes and Gardens. Since discontinuing its public open house in 2017, the company continues to ship seed directly to gardeners across the United States and Canada.

Sebastopol Beginnings and the Spencer Sweet Pea Journey

Glenys Johnson first fell in love with sweet peas at age five while picking her inaugural bouquet in her grandfather’s garden, a passion that shaped her horticultural career. In 1989 she began trial plantings of cut-flower sweet peas in her Sebastopol backyard, expanding to a neighbouring field by 1990 to meet local florist demand. A 1992 class at the local junior college introduced her to the English Spencer sweet pea, whose notably large frilled blossoms and long strong stems convinced her to import Spencer seed from 1993 onward and join England’s National Sweet Pea Society.

The 1997 Brand Founding and Catalogue Retail Era

In 1997 Glenys formally launched Enchanting Sweet Peas as a sweet pea seed company, initially offering 13 named Spencer varieties imported from England alongside a mixed-variety packet. The company printed its first black-and-white catalogue in 1999, mailed to roughly 2,000 gardeners, and held its inaugural public Sweet Pea Open House that same year. By 2000 enchantingsweetpeas.com was online, with some seed now grown on-site, and from 2002 to 2012 colour catalogues were mailed in autumn and spring runs to a list that grew to 23,000 gardeners across the United States and Canada.

A Twenty-Eight Variety Range and Two Retail Pack Sizes

Since 2008 Enchanting Sweet Peas has offered 28 named sweet pea varieties spanning pink, white, blue, violet, red, peach, bicolour and striped selections. Every seed packet is grown, harvested and packed on-site, with single-variety retail packets containing 10 seeds and selected high-volume varieties additionally offered in 50-seed farmer/florist packs. Every seed order is shipped with a complimentary Sweet Pea Growing Tips guide, sold-out varieties are substituted with similar alternatives, and a germination guarantee backs every packet sold.

Cultivation Notes and US-and-Canada Shipping

The company recommends planting in the cooler half of the year for the strongest stems and most prolific bloom, with fall sowing in hot-summer regions, October-to-April sowing in temperate zones, and indoor pre-starting six weeks before the last frost in cold-winter areas. Seeds benefit from an overnight soak, vines require six-to-nine-foot trellising, and frequent cutting plus pod removal significantly extend the flowering window. Enchanting Sweet Peas ships seeds and supplies via USPS to the United States and Canada, dispatches the next business day after ordering, and guarantees both germination and full refunds for dissatisfied customers.
