2026 年 Zoom 讲座系列在 1 月 18 日由北卡州立大学 John Dole 教授主讲 “From Field to Vase” 采后处理,2 月 22 日由 Cory Tischman 介绍美国牡丹协会 Award of Landscape Merit (ALM) 项目,3 月 22 日由 David 与 Linette Sorrentino 讲解牡丹评审。每年由会员投票选出的 Peony of the Year 是最具公众影响力的项目:2025 年为安大略育种家 Lyman Cousins (1889–1973) 培育、Klehm 1981 年登录的 Soft Salmon Saucer,2024 年为 Ménard/D’Aoust 2003 年登录的 Prosperity Maud。 (Alphabetical listing of registered Canadian peonies to 2023),并通过网站 Newsletter 板块发布历史通讯供会员查阅。
会员可参加年度 AGM (曾先后在 Hamilton、Montréal、Rosemère、Regina、Oshawa、Ottawa Rideau Hall 举办) 与 Oshawa Peony Festival 等地区牡丹节,会费支持 Peony of the Year 评选、Webinar 制作与 Zoom 平台运营。
The Canadian Peony Society (CPS / Société canadienne de la pivoine, SCP) is a national non-profit, volunteer-led organisation founded on June 14, 1998 by John Simkins at the Royal Botanical Gardens in Hamilton, Ontario. Headquartered today in St. Pauls, Ontario, the Society is dedicated to promoting the cultivation, hybridisation, and garden use of peonies across Canada, connecting hobbyists and professional growers through publications, programs, and a shared commitment to education and conservation.
History and Governance
The CPS was launched by John Simkins at the Royal Botanical Gardens on June 14, 1998; Simkins served as its inaugural President and set the Society’s open-sharing ethos by selling seedlings in small plastic cups for CA$1 each. On June 10, 2023, the Society celebrated its 25th anniversary at the 19th Annual Oshawa Peony Festival in Oshawa Valley Botanical Gardens. The board of directors and Awards Chair (Darlene Kalawsky) coordinate operations entirely by Zoom from across Canada, with financial books reviewed annually by an independent auditor. Reiner Jakubowski received the 25th Anniversary Distinguished Service Award for serving as President (from 2000), Secretary, Membership Coordinator, and as ICRA peony cultivar Registrar for 18 years during which he processed roughly 800 new registrations.
Publications and Public Education
The CPS delivers educational programming through its newsletter archive, social channels, and an annual Zoom Speaker Series. The 2026 series opened on January 18 with North Carolina State University’s Dr. John Dole on “From Field to Vase” postharvest handling, continued on February 22 with Cory Tischman on the American Peony Society’s Award of Landscape Merit (ALM) program, and continued on March 22 with David and Linette Sorrentino on peony judging. The Peony of the Year, voted on by members, is the Society’s flagship public engagement initiative: 2025’s selection is Soft Salmon Saucer, bred by Ontario hybridiser Lyman Cousins (1889–1973) and registered by Klehm in 1981; 2024’s was Prosperity Maud (Ménard/D’Aoust, 2003). The CPS also maintains the Alphabetical Listing of Registered Canadian Peonies to 2023 and archives past newsletters online.
Programs and Resources
Two core platforms anchor the CPS resource network. The Peony Vendors directory lists Canadian, U.S., and international commercial members — most shipping bare root in autumn, some offering potted plants, with cross-border orders requiring a phytosanitary certificate and import licence; the Society explicitly disclaims any endorsement. The Further Information About Peonies hub aggregates reading lists, equipment suppliers, photography guides, flower-form references, and storage/cutting PDFs from the American Peony Society, Hollingsworth Peonies, Minneapolis Peony Society, and other partners. The CPS also curates peony collections at the Central Experimental Farm, Les Jardins de Métis, and Devonian Botanic Garden, and runs an annual Seed and Root Sale open to members.
Awards and Community Engagement
Two annual awards recognise service to Canadian peonies. The John Simkins Memorial Hybridizer Award honours individuals or teams advancing Canadian hybridisation, seed-raising, or hybridiser education and may be awarded posthumously. The Lifetime Achievement Award celebrates members whose long-term contributions — as volunteer, grower, leader, ambassador, author, editor, board member, or donor of roots to public gardens — have shaped the peony world; the 2025 recipient is horticulturist Brian Porter, past president of both the Prairie and Canadian Peony Societies, who in 1994 helped relocate the Agriculture Canada peony collection at Indian Head. Members participate in the Annual General Meeting (held in Hamilton, Montréal, Rosemère, Regina, Oshawa, and Ottawa’s Rideau Hall) and regional festivals such as the Oshawa Peony Festival; dues fund the Peony of the Year, webinars, and Zoom operations.
