Mukoyama Orchids is a commercial orchid breeding and production enterprise based in Koshu City, Yamanashi Prefecture, Japan. Founded in 1965, the company has long been engaged in the hybridization and tissue-culture propagation of Cymbidium, Phalaenopsis, Waran-style Cymbidium, and Odontoglossum, and is regarded as one of the representative Japanese producers in commercial orchid cultivation and cultivar development.

Brand History and Corporate Reorganization

Founded in June 1965 in Japan, Mukoyama Orchids was reorganized as a limited company (Yugen-kaisha) in 1983 and converted to a joint-stock company (Kabushiki-kaisha) in 2002. On 1 February 2025, the company completed a management integration with Kabushiki-kaisha FARM BASE, and FARM BASE Inc. is now the operating legal entity while Mukoyama continues to be used as the brand name for the orchid business.

The long-term corporate goal of Mukoyama Orchids is the fusion of nature and technology, with three stated objectives: the global promotion of orchid culture, stronger international competitiveness, and the development of high-quality cultivars. The Mukoyama brand is currently cultivated in partnership with growers in China, Vietnam, Korea, the United States, the European Union, Brazil, Colombia, and Japan, and the company established Mukoyama Orchids Wuxi Co., Ltd. in China as an overseas tissue-culture seedling production base.

Cultivar Development and Global Production Network

Mukoyama Orchids conducts hybrid breeding using Cymbidium, Phalaenopsis, Waran-type Cymbidium, Zygopetalum, Odontoglossum and related genera as parent stock. From the late 1960s, the company established a modern high-level tissue-culture technology system through exchanges with American researchers, propagation specialists, and the Japanese academic community of plant tissue culture, and currently provides a stable supply of high-quality tissue-culture seedlings of selected Cymbidium, Miltonia, Phalaenopsis, Zygopetalum and Paphiopedilum cultivars alongside flowering-plant sales.

In 2006, Mukoyama Orchids Wuxi Co., Ltd. began producing mericlone seedlings in China, applying the high-level propagation techniques developed by Mukoyama to deliver the highest-quality orchid seedlings worldwide to global orchid enthusiasts. The Waran WARAN series developed in-house, inspired by the East Asian aesthetic of refined simplicity, combines East Asian orchid and Western Cymbidium genetics and has been supplied to domestic and overseas customers continuously for 35 years since its commercialization in 1990.

World Orchid Show Awards and International Technology Transfer

Mukoyama Orchids has participated in Japan’s largest orchid exhibition, the World Orchid Show, every year since 1991 and has received numerous awards. In 1992, the Cymbidium Lovely Bunny Othello received the Grand Prix of Japan (Nihon Taisho), one of the most iconic awarded cultivars in the history of Japanese orchid breeding. In subsequent years, the company received multiple Grand Prizes, Excellence Awards, Encouragement Awards, and Special Awards in the display category, individual judging category, and fragrance category.

Mukoyama Orchids attended the 12th World Orchid Conference held in Tokyo in 1987 and the 13th World Orchid Conference held in New Zealand in 1990, where the representative director gave a lecture on Japanese Cymbidium cultivation. The company’s breeding and cultivation techniques have been continuously transferred overseas through technical partnerships with orchid growers in New Zealand and Australia, and through its production and distribution bases in China, the United States, and the European Union, making it one of the representative Japanese enterprises in internationalizing orchid technology.

In-House Materials MOLCOAT and MOLBARK

Drawing on 60 years of orchid cultivation experience, Mukoyama Orchids developed two in-house materials for professional growers and home hobbyists: MOLCOAT slow-release coated fertilizer for orchids, and MOLBARK orchid planting medium. MOLCOAT gradually releases nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, and trace elements over six to nine months, requiring only one annual application to cover the full growing season, and is widely used by both professional orchid growers and home cultivators.

MOLBARK uses New Zealand-grown radiata pine bark as its raw material, processed through a maturation step that removes the waxy outer layer while preserving internal moisture and nutrient retention, producing a planting medium with both good drainage and water-holding capacity. It is suitable for Cymbidium, Phalaenopsis, Odontoglossum, Cattleya, Dendrobium, Paphiopedilum, Oncidium, Miltonia, Waran-style Cymbidium, Zygopetalum, Lycaste, and Dendrobium-Phalaenopsis type orchids over long cultivation cycles. The Kanayama Farm direct sales outlet is open year-round, offering visitors Mukoyama-bred orchid products and the materials described above.
