Company Overview

Keisei Rose Nurseries, Inc. was founded on March 11, 1959 as the core rose-breeding, propagation and distribution arm of Japan’s Keisei Group. Headquartered at 755 Owada Shinden, Yachiyo City, Chiba Prefecture, the company has 73 employees (as of March 2026) and 40 million yen of paid-in capital. Its corporate philosophy, “Roses, Dreams and Happiness to People All Over the World,” has guided six decades of breeding work and global distribution partnerships.

Breeding and Variety Development

The company established its research division at founding in 1959 to breed world-class garden-rose cultivars. Its varieties have won major international prizes including gold medals for ‘Seika’ (New Zealand, 1967), ‘Kibou’ (The Hague, Monza and Roeselare, 1986), ‘Ryokkou’ (Baden-Baden, 1989) and ‘Honoka’ (Lyon “Grand Rose of the Century,” 2002). Beyond roses, the company co-developed the Surfinia petunia series with Suntory Flowers, earning Japan’s Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Award in 2001. Internationally, the firm is the exclusive Japanese licensee for eight of the world’s leading rose breeders—Meilland (France), Kordes (Germany), Tantau (Germany), Interplant (Netherlands), De Ruiter (Netherlands), Dümmen Orange (Netherlands), Jackson & Perkins (USA) and Dickson (UK)—while exporting its own varieties to North America, Europe and South Korea.

Keisei Rose Garden

Adjacent to Yachiyo-Midorigaoka Station, the company-operated Keisei Rose Garden showcases more than 1,600 rose varieties and over 10,000 plants, and has been honoured with the World Federation of Rose Societies (WFRS) Award of Garden Excellence. The on-site nursery shop stocks more than 1,000 varieties; peak bloom runs from mid-May to early June and again from mid-October to early November. Beyond the display garden, the company runs cut-rose propagation, retail garden-rose nurseries, a landscape construction division (licensed by Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism as a “Special Construction” operator, permit (Toku-04) No. 4117), interior plant leasing, and an ISO 9001:2015-certified quality management system for the landscape division.

International Reach and Community Contributions

Keisei Rose Nurseries signed its first international agency agreement with Armstrong Nurseries of the United States in 1961, became the Japanese agent for Meilland of France in 1964, and has since built a global licensing network covering cut-rose, garden-rose and petunia royalty streams. It was one of the first Japanese firms to file rose variety registrations under the revised Seed and Seedling Act in 1978, and its varieties earned gold medals at the 1992 Floriade (Netherlands) and 1993 IGA (Germany) horticultural expositions. The company opened its online mail-order business in 2004, and from 2014 onward has run a community-contributions program donating rose plants to local municipalities and assisting in the upkeep of municipal rose plantings, while also supporting international rose trials under the World Federation of Rose Societies.
