A Swiss Seed Shop That Sells Only Online
Saemereien.ch is run by Botanik Sämereien AG, registered in Pfäffikon SZ in the canton of Schwyz. There is no shop floor. The site states plainly that customers cannot visit a sales area, and that picking an order up at the premises has to be arranged in advance.

The catalogue is split into eight sections: vegetables, herbs, flowers, other seeds, planting stock and mushroom spawn, plants, crop protection and care, and garden accessories. The homepage claims more than 5,000 species and varieties of seed plus more than 3,000 other garden items. Counting the category pages gives 1,549 flower seed listings and 605 herb listings, while the sitemap holds 5,155 seed product pages, one per product per language, which matches the 5,000-plus figure.
The site’s own breakdown is finer: over 400 tomato varieties, over 400 chilli and pepper varieties, over 360 spice seeds, over 300 medicinal plants, and more than 1,450 flower seeds, many of them wildflowers. Close to sixty suppliers and brands sit behind the stock, among them ProSpecieRara, Sativa Rheinau, Reinsaat, Kokopelli and Quedlinburger.
Started in Zurich in 2015
The company was entered in the commercial register in April 2015 as a limited liability company in Zurich. In June 2022 it converted to a stock corporation, raising share capital from CHF 20,000 to CHF 100,000, and the registered office moved to Freienbach. The registered purpose is the collection, propagation and sale of organic seed, with an emphasis on native wildflowers and grasses. Robert Werthmüller is managing director.
The team page lists nine staff, two external specialists, and a mascot named Kaya at the end of the list. The company won the Swiss Digital Commerce Award in its category in 2020 and again in 2022, plus a third place in 2020.
Old Varieties Are Not Nostalgia
The old-varieties section opens with three names: Teufelsfeige, grüne Zebra and blaue Himmelsleiter, all plants with a growing history that had almost dropped out of cultivation. The page is blunt about the cause. Once farming industrialised, higher-yielding hybrids displaced regional varieties and the range narrowed year after year; most produce sold today is uniform, fast-growing and unblemished.
ProSpecieRara, a Swiss foundation, collects heritage varieties, grows them in display gardens and works to get the seed back into kitchen gardens. The practical argument for growing them is genetic breadth: tolerance of extreme sites and resistance to particular diseases tends to survive in the varieties that were dropped, and that material matters both to breeders and to biodiversity.
Sowing by Month, Mixing by Plant
The sowing calendar is a clickable grid: herbs, vegetables and flowers, twelve months each, and clicking a month lists what can be sown then. A flowering calendar and a harvest calendar follow the same logic, sorted by bloom and by picking time.

Mixed cultivation is a separate strand, covering which crops do better grown together. Wildflower mixtures form their own group of 69 blends, sorted by use: shady woodland edges, wild bees, urban balcony boxes. A light filter splits full sun, with 45 blends, from partial shade, with 18.
Product pages carry three markers: BIO for organic, ALTE SORTE for heritage, and TOPFGARTEN for varieties suited to pots. Filtering by marker is quicker than walking the categories.
Organic Seed and a Balcony’s Worth of Space
The organic section gives the background: more than 16 percent of Swiss farmland is now worked to organic standards, and organic product sales exceed CHF 4 billion a year. Organic breeding stresses open-pollinated, seed-saveable varieties and free access to seed, and that is where the shop’s organic lines come from.
The balcony strand is called Topfgarten. Varieties carrying that marker grow in pots or troughs, outdoors or as houseplants. Related stock includes a seed advent calendar holding 24 packets of open-pollinated seed at CHF 48, and several mushroom growing kits such as oyster and pink oyster.
On service, shipping is free from CHF 100, and the shop carries Trusted Shops certification with a fourteen-day return window.
