Old House Dahlias

(Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife)

Couch St. Greenway)、New Seasons (Hawthorne / Concordia)、7 Corners、QFC Burnside、Sammy’s Flowers、Flowers By Donna、Beaumont Floral

About the Farm

Old House Dahlias is a small family-run dahlia farm located in Tillamook, Oregon, USA, about a mile from the Pacific coast along US Highway 101. Owner-operator Mark Harvey tends 14 acres planted with more than 200 dahlia varieties. The farm supplies cut flowers to Portland-area stores from late July through late November, ships tubers nationwide each spring starting in February, and hosts the annual Dahlia Fest each September.

Founding Story

Mark Harvey was a fishery technician for the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife when he planted his first four dahlia tubers in his Southeast Portland backyard in 2006, intending to earn a little extra income. Within a few years the patch had grown to 80-plus varieties, and he quit his day job and relocated the operation to 14 acres in Tillamook in early 2016. The name “Old House” comes from the old Oregon house where he grew up.

Grow Practices and Variety Range

The catalog lists roughly 196 dahlias in 20-plus ADS classes, including Waterlily, Stellar, Single, Semi Cactus, Pom Pon, Peony, Orchid, Novelty, Miniature Ball, Lacinated, Informal Decorative (the largest class at 44 cultivars), Incurved Cactus, Heirloom, Formal Decorative, Collarettes, Cactus, Ball, and Anemone. Tubers are priced from $6.95 to $24.95 and ship across the U.S. Mark posts his own planting notes on the Dahlia Instructions page, recommending low-nitrogen fertilizer, bone meal, side-planting tubers at 4-6 inches, and waiting until soil holds a steady 60°F before planting.

Cut-Flower Program and Community

From late July through late November, Old House Dahlias cut flowers are available at more than a dozen Portland-area stores, including Whole Foods Market locations, New Seasons Hawthorne and Concordia, 7 Corners, QFC on Burnside, Sammy’s Flowers, Flowers By Donna, and Beaumont Floral. Mark also accepts custom orders for weddings and events. He has given talks to local garden clubs such as the Nehalem Bay Garden Club. Contact details are listed on the website.

Dahlia Fest and Visits

The farm opens to visitors from mid-August through the first frost on Saturdays and Sundays. Each September the Dahlia Fest draws visitors with field tours, on-site tuber ordering for the following season, and a barn-sized mural painted by local artist Hellen Hill depicting the old house that inspired the farm’s name.
