历史沿革
田野历史植物园（Planting Fields Arboretum State Historic Park）坐落于纽约州拿骚县的长岛地区，具体位于奥斯特湾镇（Town of Oyster Bay）上布鲁克维尔村（Upper Brookville）。园区占地超过400英亩（约160公顷），是美国镀金时代（Gilded Age）末期最具代表性的私人庄园之一。

1924年，威廉·罗伯逊·寇的原配夫人去世后，他与卡罗琳·格雷厄姆·斯劳特（Caroline Graham Slaughter）再婚。卡罗琳是一位慈爱的继母，对寇与前妻生育的四个孩子关怀备至。寇氏家族在春季和圣诞节期间居住于此，其他时间则往返于他们在佛罗里达、怀俄明和南卡罗来纳州的其他房产。
1955年威廉·罗伯逊·寇去世后，庄园产权捐赠给纽约州，并成立田野历史植物园基金会（Planting Fields Foundation）进行管理。卡罗琳在庄园主楼（Manor House）居住至1960年去世。
今日园区

Historical Background
Planting Fields Arboretum State Historic Park is located in Upper Brookville, within the Town of Oyster Bay, Nassau County, Long Island, New York. Spanning over 400 acres (160 hectares), it stands as one of the most remarkable private estates remaining from America’s Gilded Age.
The land was originally purchased in 1904 by New York businessman James Byrne. It was soon acquired by railroad and insurance executive William Robertson Coe and his wife Mary “Mai” Huttleston Rogers Coe—daughter of Henry H. Rogers, a principal of Standard Oil. The Coe family began renting the property in 1911 and purchased it in 1913 for $750,000, establishing it as their spring country residence.
Estate Development
Upon acquiring the estate, the Coe family embarked on extensive horticultural planning. The Main House (also known as Coe Hall), a 67-room Tudor Revival mansion designed by architect Guy Lowell and the firm Walker & Gillette, was completed in 1915. The grounds were designed by Guy Lowell and the Olmsted Brothers.
Today, the estate features greenhouses, gardens, manicured lawns, woodland paths, and outstanding plant collections. The greenhouse, also designed by Lowell, remains a significant component of the estate.
Family Legacy
After his first wife’s death in 1924, William Robertson Coe married Caroline Graham Slaughter. Caroline was a devoted stepmother to Coe’s four children from his previous marriage. The Coe family resided at Planting Fields during springs and Christmases, spending other seasons at their properties in Florida, Wyoming, and South Carolina.
Following William Coe’s death in 1955, the property was donated to New York State, and the Planting Fields Foundation was established to manage and preserve the estate. Caroline continued to reside in the Manor House until her passing in 1960.
Today’s Arboretum
Today, the Planting Fields Foundation continues to preserve and share this historic estate through diverse educational programs, exhibitions, and community events. The arboretum hosts numerous annual events including the Branches in Bloom spring festival, Spring 5K run, and summer Junior Rangers day camp.
The foundation is currently collaborating with world-renowned landscape designer Piet Oudolf to create the new Oudolf Garden. Known for his naturalistic planting designs, Oudolf’s one-acre garden will feature over 24,000 plants and is scheduled to open in 2026 as a signature landscape within the arboretum.
Education and Research
The Education Center at Planting Fields offers hands-on learning experiences for K-12 school groups, including nature exploration and service learning programs. The archives preserve invaluable materials related to the Coe family and estate history, serving as an important resource for studying the Gilded Age and Long Island’s Gold Coast era.
The arboretum also conducts research initiatives including Olmsted 200 at Planting Fields and the Cultural Landscape Report, continuing the legacy of the Olmsted Brothers’ landscape design vision.
Visitor Information
Located approximately one hour from New York City, Planting Fields Arboretum is a significant cultural and historical landmark on Long Island.
