Farm Overview
Sunny Meadows Flower Farm sits about six miles east of downtown Columbus, Ohio, on the edge of a residential neighborhood that has become one of the Midwest’s largest urban flower farms. Founded and still run by first-generation farmers Steve and Gretel Adams, the operation spans more than 50 acres across four farm locations in central Ohio, where more than 500 flower varieties are grown alongside greenhouses that buffer Ohio’s weather swings. The retail line is anchored at the Farmstand self-serve shop run from the main farm, and wholesale orders are served by a separate wholesale site aimed at florists and retailers across the Midwest and beyond.
Farm History
The farm was started by Steve and Gretel Adams in 2006 on their own homestead as a small kitchen garden paired with chickens, ducks and pigs, where they canned vegetables and made their own soap. Flowers started out as a side experiment, with simple straight bunches of sunflowers and zinnias sold at farmers markets along with wedding and event floral design. With no formal agricultural training, the couple learned from mentors and fellow growers, gradually turning the flowers into the main business and phasing out livestock over the years.
Product Lines
The online retail shop carries fresh-cut flower bunches and bouquets, dried flower bunches and wreaths, fall bulbs (including anemone corms, ornithogalum, ranunculus corms and tulip bulbs), dahlia tubers and rooted cuttings, as well as perennials and foliage plants suited to cutting gardens. Seasonal holiday wreaths and evergreens are released in late autumn, while dried flower bunches stay in stock year-round. From late spring through late fall the weekly fresh-cut assortment shifts with what’s in bloom in central Ohio, letting customers taste the season through changing varieties.
Sales Channels
The farm runs two parallel lines, one for end consumers and one for florists. On the retail side, the online shop ships nationwide, the central Ohio local delivery handles Columbus-area orders, and the on-site Farmstand offers self-serve bouquets, with additional bouquet distribution through select grocery partners across Ohio. The wholesale side is served by a dedicated wholesale site that delivers direct to designers and florists in Columbus, Cincinnati and Cleveland and ships nationwide via UPS and Southwest Cargo. Order details and current contact information are kept on the farm’s official websites.
Industry Engagement
Steve and Gretel have been active members of the Association of Specialty Cut Flower Growers (ASCFG) and have published more than thirty articles in Growing for Market magazine. They have been presenting at farm conferences since 2013, run both online and in-person workshops, and offer consulting services to other growers and florists, often cited among the practitioners who helped popularize the farmer-florist model in the United States. Slow Flowers and similar domestic flower industry organizations have listed Sunny Meadows among the representative sustainable cut-flower farms in Ohio.
