About the Nursery

Kwekerij Nico Zonneveld is a small family-run perennial nursery on the edge of the village of De Noord in the town of Heerhugowaard, in the province of North Holland in the north of the Netherlands. It was founded by Nico Zonneveld, who originally worked as a cut-flower grower before shifting the focus of the nursery to perennials, ornamental grasses, bulbs and annuals more than twenty-five years ago. The nursery is small but carries a notably wide assortment, and has been operating by appointment only since 1 June 2022.

Specialist Plant Lines

The core range covers perennials and ornamental grasses, with phlox, hardy geraniums, hellebores, ornamental grasses, salvias and (autumn) asters as the long-standing strong sellers. In recent years Nico has expanded the edible plant and herb range as well, giving home-garden customers a wider choice. Plant raising is done without any synthetic chemicals: only organic fertilisers and plant-derived treatments such as garlic extract, horsetail and nettle slurry are used for pest and disease control, which fits the brief for genuinely chemical-free perennial production.

Customers, Order System and Visits

Most of the nursery’s plants go to three groups: garden designers (tuinontwerpers), landscape contractors (hoveniers) and fellow small nurseries (collega-kwekers), alongside a steady stream of private garden customers. The long-standing network lets Nico source almost any perennial the Dutch market is selling, and the nursery will also pull in unusual or newly released cultivars on request. Customers can email over their planting list (beplantingsplan/plantenlijst) and the nursery will assemble the full order for collection or delivery, which saves a lot of searching time on the customer’s side. Since 1 June 2022 the nursery has been open by appointment only (alleen op afspraak), so visitors need to email ahead to arrange a time on site. The change lets Nico concentrate on propagation and shipping while still giving private customers enough time for in-person advice on the day. Plant lists are still submitted by email and the nursery coordinates the dispatch.

Organic Practice and Ecological Position

The nursery’s clearest differentiator is its commitment to chemical-free propagation: no synthetic pesticides or fertilisers are used at any stage from propagation to dispatch. That fits the wider European “naturalistic planting” trend in which designers and home gardeners look for small, organic, biodiversity-friendly perennial suppliers rather than bulk greenhouse production. A large share of Nico’s customers are ecological garden designers and naturalistic-garden owners who specifically want stock raised that way.

Reputation and Community

There is no shop front, so most of the business runs by reputation, professional plant lists and word of mouth within the Dutch garden-design community. Nico Zonneveld has appeared in Dutch gardening media and trade press, and the nursery is regularly cited as a representative small chemical-free perennial specialist. The website kwekerijnicozonneveld.nl is intentionally simple but brings together the assortment list, the by-appointment contact, the email order template and the press mentions in one place, which is what garden designers and private customers actually need. For anyone planning a naturalistic or low-input garden, this is a typical Dutch small-organic perennial nursery worth knowing about.
