About the Nursery and Its Founding

Rogue Valley Roses is a family-run mail-order nursery in Medford, in southern Oregon (United States), specialising in own-root antique and rare roses. The nursery was founded and is still run by Janet Inada, who serves as a Consulting Rosarian for the American Rose Society and is a member of the Heritage Rose Foundation. Under her care the nursery maintains a living inventory of more than 1,500 rose varieties, spanning old garden classes such as Teas, Noisettes, Chinas and Bourbons, as well as modern Hybrid Teas, Shrubs, Polyanthas, Climbers and Ramblers.

Growing Philosophy and Propagation

Every rose sold by the nursery is propagated on its own roots from cuttings, rather than grafted onto rootstock. Once rooted, the cuttings are potted up into 3-by-3-inch “band” pots about 5½ inches deep with an open bottom crossed by a plastic band. The plants are ready to ship when roots appear at the bottom and new top growth shows the cutting is established. Own-root roses can be transplanted whenever the soil is not frozen and daytime temperatures stay in the 70s for at least two months, and typically begin blooming within weeks or a few months. They are also able to regenerate from the root crown if the top is frozen back or cut down, and old own-root plants are known to remain vigorous for a hundred years or more.
