About the nursery
Kwekerij De Hessenhof is a family-run nursery in Ede, Gelderland, on the Veluwe in the Netherlands. It grows around 3,000 species of biological perennials on roughly two hectares, with seven or eight staff in the high season, and bills itself as one of the largest perennial ranges in Western Europe. Visitors walk between hedges and wooded borders, comparing mature plants in the display beds, and use the printed plant list they prepare online to find what they want on site.
History
The nursery was founded in 1981 on the sandy soils of the Veluwe, when biological growing was still unusual in Dutch horticulture. From the outset it chose to propagate its own plants in its own leaf-mould compost, and it has stuck to the same approach for more than forty years. The current layout of open display beds took shape through gradual expansion in the 1990s.
Growing philosophy
The nursery replaces peat with home-made leaf mould (bladaarde) as the main growing medium. The leaf mould is mixed with organic fertiliser, bark and volcanic rock to stay loose and free-draining, and it holds structure better than peat through wet winters. No synthetic fertilisers or chemical pesticides are used; soil life is kept active with mycorrhiza, compost tea and other biological inputs. All plants sold carry Skal biological certification, and the nursery is regularly inspected by the Dutch organic certification body.
Plant collection
Almost every plant the nursery sells is propagated on site, which is the cornerstone of its identity. On-site propagation keeps variety identity and plant health under the nursery’s own control, and avoids the CO2 cost of long-distance plant shipping. For a handful of patented varieties — Alstroemeria ‘Indian Summer’ and Brunnera ‘Sea Heart’ — the nursery buys in young plants under a Skal dispensation and finishes them biologically. A small share of seed is also bought in, mainly to preserve colour forms of plants such as aquilegia, but the rule stays the same: as much biological and as much in-house as possible.
Opening hours
The nursery opens to the public from late March to the end of May, and again from early August to the end of October, on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 9:00 to 17:00. From 1 June to 5 August it closes for the summer, and the mother beds are not viewable in that period either. No plants are shipped, no orders are taken and no plants are reserved — visitors come in person. Stock on the website is updated every Wednesday evening, and Thursday is the surest day to find what you want. The site also has a small garden shop selling organic leaf mould, tools, books, plant labels and gift vouchers. The nursery has run cuttings and seed-sowing courses in the past, and has hosted public lectures as well.
