Seeds in Space 与 NASA合作

Company Overview

Park Seed Company (Geo. W. Park Seed Co.) was founded in1868 by15-year-old George W. Park at his kitchen table in Libonia, Pennsylvania, initially to sell seeds from his own backyard garden for pocket money. Park placed a $3.50 advertisement in The Rural American and unexpectedly received $6.50 in seed orders, setting the course of his life. The company relocated to La Park, Pennsylvania in1902 to leverage rail shipping, then moved south to Greenwood, South Carolina in1918 when George married home demonstration agent Mary Barratt Park. After George’s death in1935, Mary took over and their sons and grandchildren continued running the company into the early21st century. Today the physical headquarters is in Hodges, South Carolina while the warehouse remains in Greenwood, serving American gardeners for more than150 years as one of the oldest and largest mail-order seed and plant companies in the country.

NASA Seeds in Space Program

Park Seed has partnered with NASA on the “Seeds in Space” educational initiative since1983. The first payload of approximately25 pounds of seeds across40 fruit and vegetable varieties flew aboard Challenger mission STS-6 on April4,1983. In1984, one million tomato seeds launched on STS-41C remained in orbit aboard the Long Duration Exposure Facility for five years before being retrieved by Columbia mission STS-32 in1989 and distributed as132,000 experimental kits to64,000 teachers across40,000 schools in30 countries, ultimately involving more than three million students in one of NASA’s largest science education experiments. On July4,2006 Park Seed and NASA launched the fourth phase of the collaboration, providing space-exposed Cinnamon Basil seeds for the Lunar Plant Growth Chamber Engineering Design Challenge.
